Biden's Move to Address Migrant Influx
Addressing Border Issues
Addressing Border Issues
Joe Biden announced an executive order on Tuesday in an attempt to respond to the criticisms at the Mexican American border. These criticisms were directed at the amount of illegal immigration happening, which at one point, surpassed 2,500 a day. The administration has stated this executive order would be in effect immediately as the executive order states that the border will be closed if average daily crosses are greater than 1,500.
Direct Effects and Exclusions
This executive order will block asylum from those who illegally entered out nation unless they have a compelling reason. Illegal immigrants without a fear of their home country will be deported. There are exceptions for unaccompanied minors, trafficking victims, and migrants who are in present danger of harm to themselves or their families.
Political Responses and the Legislative Environment
This executive order was signed in part due to Congress' lack of ability to pass border legislation. Biden states that he's in favor of bipartisan solutions, but passed this executive order because Congress isn't acting. Some politicians praise this, while others criticize it for being too weak.
Operational Measures and Legal Challenges
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said that they would fight this in court, thus making legal challenges inevitable. The Biden Administration said they are ready to defend their new policy and will justify it on a legal and humanitarian ground.
This new border stance from Biden is expected to produce praise and condemnation from the country; this issue may be a driving force in the coming election in November.
